A Black woman with bright blue eyes is holding a cigarette. She has blood around her mouth which has flowed down onto a white t-shirt she is wearing. She s standing in the dark at night time.
Aminata Thiboult as Paris

Following a Parisienne musician as she struggles for stardom, I Love Paris is a vampiric mockumentary directed by Nicky Murphy and co-written and starring Aminata Thiboult as the titular Paris.

After being told she needs to enhance her social media presence in order to further her music career, Ami, whose stage name is I Love Paris, finds herself performing a TikTok against the backdrop of a shadowy city tunnel. What she doesn’t realise is she’s being watched by more than just her social media audience. During a full moon, Paris is transformed into a vampire and must learn the ways of bloodsuckers all whilst trying to make the stages of a music festival where her stardom could really break.

Through the success of What We Do In The Shadows (2014) and its spin-off television series, audiences are already fully aware of just how much of a winning combination the subject of vampirism is with a mockumentary style format. Whereas the aforementioned leans on the dead-pan comedy stylings of series such as The Office, Nick Murphy’s and Aminata Thiboult's I Love Paris chooses more of a This Is Spinal Tap (1985) vibe as it revolves around a bratty musician who just happens to be attempting to navigate vampirism and the music industry with a narcissistic naivety, that sort of makes her quite lovable.

Aminata Thiboult is a fan(g)tastic lead, who carries the whole production on her shoulders with a natural flair. A secondary highlight is the way in which the film chooses to concentrate on her primary objective of being a successful musician, rather than showing her abandoning that in order to live out a stereotypical vampire’s life. Vampirism isn’t romanticised in I Love Paris, it is depicted as a bit of a pain in the arse, in which its immortal victims suffer from emotional meltdowns, drug habits, and the pitfalls of the parasitic music industry, as any human mortal would.
