India de Beaufort as Joey

Director Andy Chen’s latest is a fascinating mystery box of a film. A grief-stricken author, Joey, is mourning the loss of her husband, Ben. That is until his unexpected return one day– an event that leads Joey to try and understand what exactly is happening to the reality around her. All this weaves towards a final act that blends horror and science fiction as answers are revealed as to what exactly is going on.

Another benefits greatly from a pair of committed turns at its centre. India de Beaufort is compelling both in Joey’s initial grief and the rollercoaster of emotions she must go through once her husband has seemingly returned. And Bob Morley as Ben is equal parts likeable, mysterious, misguided and, by the end, monstrous. The pair have an easy chemistry together and help convey the twists and turns of Another’s back end, all the way to a conclusion that is as fascinating as it is morally dubious. Added to this cast are a pair of smaller roles for Doug Jones and Heather Langenkamp, which is sure to please genre fans.

This is the kind of low-fi sci-fi that deserves more outings, more interested in the moral implications that scientific discoveries can have, as opposed to wowing us with big spectacle. Chen, along with his co-writer Alex Hernandez-Maxwell, have crafted an impressively cerebral script that has plenty of meat to chew over.

But it may prove a struggle for some. The pace is pointedly lethargic, and Another suffers from an emotive chilliness that creates a barrier between it and the audience. Chen doesn’t have the strongest of visual palettes, even when the narrative takes stranger and stranger turns.

But for those who can find their way past Another’s flaws, will be rewarded by a deeply fascinating sci-fi, one with enough moments of out and out horror to satisfy genre fans. Added to this is an impressive cast, headed by what is sure to be a breakout turn from de Beaufort, and Another is the kind of sci-fi worth giving a punt, no matter which reality you find yourself in.
